Four Israelis killed in a shooting in West Bank
This deadly attack , claimed by the Gaza Qassam Brigades , the armed wing of the Islamist movement Hamas , occurred two days before the resumption of direct talks between Israelis and Palestinians in Washington on Thursday , after two month suspension.
The Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak promised that those responsible for this attack ” would pay ” .
” They are terrorists who seek to sabotage pathetic attempt to resume the diplomatic process and undermine chances for success of talks that will begin in Washington, ” he said in a statement.
On his arrival in the United States , Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, speaking through his spokesman , said the attack showed that Israel should be ” no compromise “in peace talks when s Is a question of safety.
” This criminal act has once again demonstrated the need for Israel to stick firmly to its security requirements and there will be no compromise on that , ” said the spokesman , Nir Hefez .
Netanyahu , he added , ordered the Israeli security forces to spare no effort to get their hands on those responsible for this attack .
THE PROMISE OF OTHER BRIGADES KASSAM ATTACKS
According to the Israeli emergency services , victims are two men and two women , one of whom was pregnant . According to military sources , they were all from the Jewish settlement of Beit Haggai .
The Israeli army combs the area in search of assailants.
It is the deadliest attack in the West Bank in four years , when suicide attack killed four people in a Jewish settlement . Two years ago in Jerusalem, eight people were killed in an attack on a Jewish religious school .
The shooting took place near Bani Naim, near Hebron , which occur regularly clashes between Palestinians and Jewish settlers .
Sami Abu Zuhri , spokesman of the Hamas movement which controls the Gaza Strip for more than three years , welcomed with satisfaction the attack he considers ” a natural response to the crimes of the Israeli occupation of the West Bank .
The Qassam Brigades , in their claim , speak of a ” heroic operation ” . Their spokesman, Abu Ubaida , told Reuters that it was only the first of a series of attacks against Israel . “Others will follow , “he has said.
Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad condemned the attack “contrary to Palestinian interests “and pledged to take measures to prevent such attacks from recurring.
The spokesman for the Israeli police , Micky Rosenfeld , said four Israelis were traveling on Route 60 , used by settlers and Palestinians , and were ambushed .
According to Channel Two television , the attackers were riding in another car .
