How do I invest in the Stock Market? I was told it would be a good action to take. Why?

(I’m 15 years old and my neighbor said that I’m particular about my money. He said that it would be smart to invest in the stock market now while I’m still young. Is it a good idea? How do I?)

Answer :

The stock market can be a good investment but it is cyclical. That means that there are times that you hardly can’t go wrong no matter what you invest in. That was true in the mid-80′s through the early 90′s. Every investor thought they were “gifted”.
It also means that there are times you most likely will lose your shirt.

In order to be a good investor you need to study the markets. You need to understand what went on in the past and what triggered it. You need to stay on top of of the market and know when to buy and know when to sell. Fortunes have been lost holding out for the “52 week high”. You need to acquire a serious bit of humility and know when to take you losses and run.

Fortunately you don’t actually have to invest real money to play the market and develop your investment strategies. There are many programs out there that will allow you to test your strategies on historic data as well as track current prices. That is the smart way of learning. Learn about technical analysis, stock options, etc. Once you have proven your investment strategies work for a couple years or so you can SLOWLY enter the market. Never invest money in the stock market that you are not prepaired to lose! (Say the last sentence to yourself 100 times)

In the mean time you should invest your money in CD’s, government bonds, etc.

PS The best financial advise I can give to you is to instill upon you the following:
NEVER BORROW MONEY UNLESS YOU CAN MAKE MONEY ON THE MONEY YOU BORROW!
Few people can grasp the importance of this concept.
