The United States welcomes the capture of a Taliban leader
The White House on Wednesday described the capture of Taliban commander Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar “great success” for the joint efforts of the United States and Pakistan.
“It’sa great success for our joint efforts in the region,” said the press spokesman of the White House, Robert Gibbs, without giving further details on the capture or interrogation of the prisoner.
In a statement released Wednesday morning, the Pakistani military said the number two of the Afghan Taliban had been arrested in the port city of Karachi in southern Pakistan, while the Taliban claim that Mr. Baradar is safe and leads the fighting in Afghanistan.
Pakistani experts say the arrest of the top Taliban commander should represent a significant change to the policy towards the Taliban, while American officials see this new success of cooperation between Pakistan and the United States in the fight against terrorism.
