What major should I pursue if I want a job in the stock market?
(I’m a freshman at the University at Buffalo currently. I’m enrolled as an economics major but don’t feel as if the teachers are as good and I’m thinking of going to Management and Business. What are the best majors for jobs in the stock market?)
Answer :
All you need is a college degree for go to work with a brokerage firm in sales “stock broker.” They will train you.
What will help you there is:
1. Communications
2. Behavioral Psychology
Generally you need the ability to sell and understand how to communicate effectively with people and understand their behavior.
A general business degree or econ degree is fine, but this won’t significantly improve your chances of getting hired in retail brokerage sales. I would get no less than a MBA in business.
If you want to go beyond sales, and to an analyst position (prob more money if your good) this is what I would do:
1. Business Finance major and get a masters or better.
2. CFA exam Level I, then II, then III
3. A business law degree or in securities law can open a lot more doors than any basic degree, assuming you pass the bar.
I would try and get into a bigger school. Find out what school you want to go to and go get counseling there. They can tell you what classes you need to take at your current school, then transfer to the bigger school your last 2 years.
If I was to do it all over that is what I would likely do. Actually I’d get the law degree first.
